A Review of Transition Metal Nitride-Based Catalysts for Electrochemical Nitrogen Reduction to Ammonia

نویسندگان

چکیده

Electrochemical nitrogen reduction (NRR) has attracted much attention as a promising technique to produce ammonia at ambient conditions in an environmentally benign and less energy-consuming manner compared the current Haber–Bosch process. However, even though research on NRR catalysts been conducted, their low selectivity reaction rate still hinder practical application of Among various catalysts, transition metal nitride (TMN)-based are expected be for NRR. This is because process can proceed via unique Mars–Van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism with compressed competing hydrogen evolution reaction. controversial issue exists regarding origin produced TMN-based catalysts. The instability lead generation from lattice instead supplied N2 gas. Thus, this review summarizes recent progress NRR, encompassing mechanism, synthetic routes, characterizations, opinions. Furthermore, future perspectives producing electrochemically using provided.

ticle as: G. Wu, et n-metal addition, Abstract Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and evolution reaction (OER) are one pair of the most important electrochemical reactions associated with energy conversion and storage technologies, such as fuel cells, metal–air batteries, and water electrolyzers. However, the sluggish ORR and OER requires a significantly large quantity of precious metals (e.g., Pt...

Transition-Metal Nitride Core@Noble-Metal Shell Nanoparticles as Highly CO Tolerant Catalysts.

Core-shell architectures offer an effective way to tune and enhance the properties of noble-metal catalysts. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of Pt shell on titanium tungsten nitride core nanoparticles (Pt/TiWN) by high temperature ammonia nitridation of a parent core-shell carbide material (Pt/TiWC). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed significant core-level shifts for Pt shells supp...

Computational Study of Electrochemical CO2 Reduction at Transition Metal Electrodes

A detailed understanding of the mechanism of electrochemical reduction of CO2 to form hydrocarbons can help design improved catalysts for this important reaction. Density functional theory calculations were used here to model the various elementary steps in this reaction on transition metal surfaces, in particular Cu(111) and Pt(111). The minimum energy paths for sequential protonation by eithe...

Enabling electrochemical reduction of nitrogen to ammonia at ambient conditions through rational catalyst design.

Commercial design of a sustainable route for on-site production of ammonia represents a potential economic and environmental breakthrough. In an analogous process to the naturally occurring enzymatic mechanism, synthesis of ammonia could be achieved in an electrochemical cell, in which electricity would be used to reduce atmospheric nitrogen and water into ammonia at ambient conditions. To date...
